Getting There

Joyabaj is located in the Quiché Department, approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Guatemala City. You can reach Joyabaj by bus or private car. The journey offers picturesque views of the Guatemalan countryside, with lush greenery and rolling hills.

Climate

Joyabaj enjoys a temperate climate, with warm days usually in the 80’s and cool nights, usually in the 60’s. The dry season, from November to March, is the most comfortable time of year, though be prepared for varied weather conditions throughout your stay.

Accommodation

As a Send Me volunteer, you will likely stay in local hotel that is centrally located. This provides you with a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and language. You will meet our support staff who will be a vital support system, helping you navigate daily life and mission in Joyabaj.

  • Health: Ensure you stay up-to-date with CDC recommended vaccinations. Local health clinics are available for minor ailments, but for more serious issues, travel to larger towns may be necessary.

Fiesta Patronal

The annual Fiesta Patronal is in honor of San Gaspar on January 6th. This vibrant celebration includes traditional dances, colorful costumes, and local foods. Witnessing such events will deepen your cultural understanding and strengthen community bonds of service.

Town Fair

The annual fair takes place the first week of August. Local vendors sell typical foods and wares. Amusement rides, games and music are a large part of this week-long festival.

  • Communication: Mobile phone coverage is available, and internet access can be found in certain areas. Plan on going without coverage during the day. Your mission support team can help guide you through your communication needs.
